TBE's Tikkun Olam Initiative

A commitment to Tikkun Olam is one of the core values of our congregation, and of the Jewish people. For many of us, it is truly central to what anchors our Jewish identities. As such, many of our members engage in service work in a variety of ways, working directly with organizations whose missions match their passions.

To bring more attention to the amazing work that is happening all around us, we will introduce a local and/or Jewish organization at the beginning of each month that is working to repair the world, inform our community about ways to support their work, and ideally, offer at least one opportunity over the course of the month to get to know that organization better.

Learn more about what they have to say about their Guiding Values here. We, Temple Beth El, are proud to support their work as it is consistent with our commitment to our own set of communal agreements, known as Social Kashrut.

Volunteer!

Love Pride? EqualityMaine is looking for volunteers to support their staff at Pride celebrations around the state. Please note that they are particularly looking for volunteers for the Pride celebrations not in Portland (they already have lots of support for Portland Pride!). See the full list of dates and locations at the link below.

Every August, EqualityMaine runs a summer camp experience for LGBTQ+ youth called New Leaders Project Camp to teach community building, leadership development, and LGBTQ+ history for the next generation of advocates. They strive for this to be accessible to all, so offer the experience with tiered pricing that includes a free option. As such, they need to raise the funding to support the camp financially and we are encouraging TBE members to make a donation to support this initiative.
