Who is Maine Needs?
Maine Needs is a grassroots organization, powered by a growing collective of volunteers. They strive to help individuals and families in Maine meet their basic, material needs by providing donated clothing, hygiene products, household items, and other necessities. They focus their work on those starting life over from scratch: domestic abuse survivors, asylum seekers and those facing financial hardships. They partner with schools, caseworkers, teachers, nurses and professional care providers to provide these material resources.

Temple Beth El chose to shine a light on Maine Needs in March 2023 because they are almost entirely volunteer powered, are incredibly effective at filling a critical need for essential home and personal material needs, and are committed to dismantling systems of oppression. Moreover, they are driving an overdue culture shift in giving that centers the dignity and infinite worth of the people they serve.
How can you get involved?
Volunteer!
Volunteers are the backbone of Maine Needs and they are always looking for more people to help. What do volunteers do? They sort and organize donations. They fulfill requests and assemble them into packages, and some deliver. Best of all, you don't have to make a regular, ongoing commitment. Sign up for a shift when you can, and you can even bring your kids! Learn more about volunteering here.

One of the most important things to know about donating material goods to Maine Needs is that you need to check their website to find out what they need. You can also organize an effort to assemble various kinds of kits - the list of kits they are accepting at any given time can be found here. And of course, monetary donations are always appreciated!
