18 and Under at TBE
Young people are involved in many aspects of synagogue life at Temple Beth El.
Hebrew School: Temple Beth El Hebrew School offers quality Jewish education in the Conservative tradition. Regular classes are supplemented by special events, family programs and religious services. The TBE School Wing teams with Hebrew School students on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
Hebrew High School: Our Hebrew High School class is open to students in grades 8-12. This year’s theme is “The 21st Century & Judaism”. Students will explore many important concepts of Judaism, gain an introduction to Jewish literacy, philosophy and theology, and be challenged intellectually as they grapple contemporary issues and questions and prepare to assume their adult roles in the Jewish community. Guest speakers, film clips, field trips and mitzvah projects are important components of the high school program. The course is taught by Education Director, Dov Goldberg.
Madrichim: As many as a dozen youth participate as Madrichim (junior faculty) at our Hebrew School. Madrichim serve as tutors, assistant teachers, technology wizards, and more.
B’nai Mitzvah Preparation: Education Director and Education Director and Shaliach Tzibur offers B’nai Mitzvah tutoring to eligible students (some are 13, some are 63!). Rabbi Braun assist B’nai Mitzvah students as they prepare their d’vrei Torah.
Reading Torah: Post B’nai Mitzvah students often read Torah at Shabbat services.
USY: Temple Beth El has an active United Synagogue Youth Chapter. USY members and Youth Advisor, Rebecca Canter, plan and participate many activities. This summer they are hosting the Temple Barbecue at Deering Oaks Park on August 30. Other USY events include: leading Shabbat services at Cedars Nursing Home, monthly lounge nights, Old Port Scavenger Hunt, snow tubing, lunch in the Rabbi’s Sukkah, and attending national and regional conventions.
Kadima: Students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in Kadima events. (You do not need to be a Temple member to participate. Past events include: Pizza & Movie, Board Games, Sukkah Party, snow tubing, and more.
